Frequently Asked Questions
The Filmmaking Workshop is an intensive training program designed for creators of all skill levels - from complete beginners to advanced filmmakers. Whether you're just starting your journey or looking to refine your existing skills, this workshop offers comprehensive guidance from Kay to help you film your video project from start to finish. It's perfect for those who want hands-on mentorship and step-by-step guidance, as well as experienced creators seeking to push their boundaries. Beyond the technical training, this workshop is also for like-minded creators who want to connect, collaborate, and enjoy an unforgettable creative experience together.
The workshop covers comprehensive cinematographic techniques including camera operation and settings, composition and framing, lighting techniques for different environments, audio recording and sound design, storytelling and narrative structure, editing and post-production workflows, color grading fundamentals, and creative problem-solving in challenging shooting conditions. You'll also learn location scouting, equipment management, and how to adapt your shooting style to desert environments.
No prior experience is required! The workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels. Beginners will receive foundational training and step-by-step guidance, while more experienced participants can focus on advanced techniques and creative challenges. Kay's teaching approach ensures everyone progresses at their own pace while contributing to the collaborative learning environment.
You should bring your camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or professional camcorder), essential lenses (wide-angle and telephoto recommended), tripod, extra batteries and memory cards, lens cleaning kit, and personal laptop for editing sessions. A detailed equipment checklist will be provided upon registration. If you don't have professional equipment, we can discuss rental options or equipment sharing arrangements.
The workshop price includes all instruction and mentoring from Kay, accommodation during the workshop period, meals throughout the experience, transportation to and from filming locations, basic equipment rental if needed, editing software access, a year-long free subscription to Storyflow.so, a year-long free subscription to Digisell.io, professional behind-the-scenes footage of every participant captured by our experienced filmmaker (perfect hero shots for your personal branding), and a certificate of completion. The price also covers group activities and networking events designed to foster connections among participants.
Accommodation is carefully selected to provide comfort while maintaining proximity to our filming locations. You'll stay in well-appointed lodges or camps that offer modern amenities while preserving the authentic desert experience. Rooms are typically shared (double occupancy) to encourage networking and collaboration, though private room options may be available for an additional fee.
Absolutely! Personalized mentoring is a cornerstone of this workshop. Kay provides individual guidance tailored to your skill level and creative goals. You'll receive one-on-one feedback on your work, personalized shooting exercises, and direct support during your video production process. Small group sizes ensure everyone receives adequate attention and mentorship.
There are only 15 spots available for this exclusive workshop experience, and spots are secured on a first-come, first-served basis when we officially open registration. To guarantee your place, you'll need to complete your registration and pay the 30% deposit as soon as registration opens. Given the limited availability and comprehensive nature of what's included, we expect spots to fill quickly. We recommend signing up for our notification list to be alerted the moment registration opens.
We accept major credit cards, bank transfers, and PayPal. To reserve your spot, a deposit of only 30% is required upon registration, with the remaining balance due 30 days before the workshop starts. Payment plans are available and encouraged for those who prefer to spread the cost over time. Once your deposit is received, you'll receive a confirmation email with detailed preparation information.
If you need to cancel more than 60 days before the workshop, you'll receive a full refund minus a small processing fee. Cancellations 30-60 days prior receive a 50% refund, which can also be applied as credit toward a future workshop. Cancellations less than 30 days prior are generally non-refundable, though exceptions may be made for medical emergencies or other extraordinary circumstances. Additionally, if the workshop has over 10 people enrolled, we can offer much more flexible refunds without questions asked - we're humans and understand that life happens, so we'll work with you to find a fair solution.
While not strictly mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended and we strongly encourage all participants to obtain comprehensive coverage. This should include medical coverage, trip cancellation protection, and equipment coverage. We can provide recommendations for reputable travel insurance providers that offer policies suitable for creative workshops and adventure travel.
The workshop takes place in November in Morocco's Sahara Desert - the most pleasant time of year to visit! Desert conditions can vary dramatically between day and night. Expect warm, comfortable days (typically 25-30°C / 77-86°F) and cool nights (around 5-15°C / 41-59°F). Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime, warm layers for evening, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), comfortable hiking boots, and a warm jacket or sweater for the cooler nights. Detailed packing lists are provided based on the specific season and location.
The walking during the workshop is quite moderate - typically just 1 hour per day, with a maximum of 2 hours on any given day. We walk purposefully to reach the best shooting locations and to make the journey part of your visual story. While Kay usually walks up to 9 hours a day when he's exploring the Sahara solo, we're "cheating a little" for the workshop to focus more time on classes and extensive filming sessions. You'll still get the authentic desert walking experience and stunning locations, but we've designed it to be accessible for all fitness levels while maximizing your learning and creative time.
Yes! One of the key goals is for every participant to complete a video project during the workshop. With Kay's guidance, you'll conceptualize, film, and edit your piece from start to finish. The final day includes a screening where everyone shares their completed work. Additionally, you'll receive professional behind-the-scenes footage of yourself captured by our experienced filmmaker throughout the workshop - perfect hero shots for your personal branding and social media. You'll leave with both your finished video project, professional BTS content featuring you, and the skills to create many more.
